Overview

At 6,476 meters, Mera Peak rises above the biologically rich Makalu-Barun National Park — a UNESCO-recognised haven for endangered wildlife, ancient cultures, and fragile high-altitude ecosystems. But this landscape is under pressure: unmanaged waste, climate change, and growing tourism are impacting trails, camps, and biodiversity.

The Mera Peak Clean-Up and Awareness Expedition is a collaborative effort uniting mountaineers, local communities, and conservationists to protect this unique Himalayan environment. Our approach blends hands-on clean-up, cultural collaboration, and science-based advocacy to create a replicable model for ethical, low-impact mountaineering in Nepal and beyond.

1. Restore Ecosystems and Reduce Pollution in High-Altitude Environments:

  • Remove 350–400 kg of waste from trekking routes and camps.

  • Install 6 weather-resistant collection points/ waste bins at key locations.

  • Ensure 70% of collected waste is recycled with local partners.

2. Reconnect People with Nature

  • Deliver 3 participatory workshops for climbers, guides, and local communities.

  • Train 25+ stakeholders in sustainable tourism practices.

  • Share sustainability messages with 100+ trekkers during the expedition.

3. Promote Citizen Science and Advocacy

  • Map at least 10 waste hotspots with GPS data.

  • Publish findings to support park management and influence policy.

What we want to do

Help us prove that mountaineering can protect the mountains we love. Whether you’re a climber, a partner organisation, or a supporter, your involvement makes a tangible difference.

Our Approach

  • Hands-On Clean-Up: Engaging climbers, guides, and porters in waste removal.

  • Sustainable Infrastructure: Installing waste bins co-designed with local input to be animal-safe and community-managed.

  • Education for Action: Pre-expedition briefings, on-trail awareness activities, and a Climate Fresk–inspired workshop in Kathmandu.

  • Data-Driven Solutions: Waste mapping and environmental footprint assessment to guide future conservation efforts.

  • A New Expedition Model: Low-emission logistics, local sourcing, and “Leave No Trace” principles embedded in every step.

We work with...

This project is built on trust and long-term relationships:

  • Hi On Life Adventures brings over a decade of community development experience in the region.

  • Local leaders and communities in Bung, Kothe, and Khare will guide our work on bin placement and cultural sensitivity.

  • Makalu-Barun National Park authorities and the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) ensure alignment with conservation priorities.

  • Local Organisations as KEEP and Avni Ltd will help us organise the workshops and treat the waste collected.

  • Women’s associations and youth groups will be engaged from planning to implementation, ensuring inclusivity and shared ownership.
